The Governing Body

The Governing Body 2016/17

The governors are the strategic leaders of schools and they have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education. The Governing Body is the school’s key strategic decision making body. It has a collective, legal responsibility for the effective management of the school, acting within a framework established by national legislation and the school’s agreed policies, and ensuring all statutory duties are met.

Governors are volunteers who bring knowledge, skills and different perspectives from their work and life experiences. They are not paid for their work. Many of them have full time jobs and all have other commitments. They sometimes take time off from their work to visit the school or to attend meetings.

Governors are not expected to take detailed decisions about the day to day running of the school. That is the responsibility of the headteacher – although the headteacher will discuss most aspects of school life with the governors. The partnership between the headteacher, staff, governors, parents, pupils and the wider community determines how well the school functions.

  • Holds at least one full Governing Body meeting each term and minutes are available from the School Office.
  • Governors are also members of smaller committees -  Achievement and Curriculum, Resources – which meet at least once each term and report back to the Governing Body.
  • Governors have their own area of responsibility and liaise regularly with the relevant teachers.
  • Governors visit and participate in school activities.

We work hard to ensure the school provides the best possible education for our pupils by:

  1. Setting the school’s vision and strategic aims and agreeing plans and policies.
  2. Making creative use of the school’s resources
  3. Monitoring and evaluating performance.
  4. Acting as a critical friend to the Headteacher and the school.
  5. Supporting and challenging the Headteacher in managing the school.
  6. Ensuring the school is accountable to the children and parents, local community, the LA and the staff.

If you are interested in becoming a governor please ask for more details at the School Office.

I am a working Mother of two. I became a governor to help make a positive contribution to the school so that it can continue to remain highly successful and go from strength to strength, supporting our children to achieve their potential so that they can excel both academically and creatively. The most rewarding part of being a governor is being in class and seeing a room full of happy, inquisitive faces that are keen to learn. As a geneticist in the NHS, I hope that I can bring a rigorous approach to governance that relies not only on traditions but on evidence based teaching and best practice.

I am a secondary school teacher and have been supporting Roxbourne School since my children attended the school. I am very much interested in seeing Roxbourne as an outstanding school, to increase community links and overall numbers in the school. I am able to help provide educational links between primary and secondary education. My analysis skills help me support and question the running of the school and offer guidance.
